From SMART watches, eyeglasses and textiles to fitness trackers and heart rate monitors, people are quickly adding wearable technology to their list of prized possessions when working out, and this trend is expected to continue to grow massively in the next few years as key players like Apple, Fitbit and Garmin continue to milk the market for what its worth. In fact, wearable technology devices have become very popular gifting options, too. Well, it's high time to be SMART about staying fit.

2) Exercise As Medicine

The health benefits of exercise cannot be denied, especially with risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke, stress and mood swings on the rise. Launched by ACSM and the American Medical Association, Exercise Is Medicine is a global health initiative that encourages physicians to include physical activity in treatment plans of their patients and to refer patients to fitness professionals. Exercise is a great preventative health tool, and it is often a more cost-effective option.

3) Quirkier Workout Methods

People are looking for more off-beat ways of staying fit from water aerobics, floating yoga and virtual boxing to twerking (yes, you read that correctly) and aerial yoga. Let's face it - many people get bored with the same workout routine day in and day out. Keeping your workout plan exciting is a good way of making sure you keep at it. Another form of staying fit that is becoming more widespread is outdoor fitness through hiking and kayaking.

4) Group Training

Sometimes you need a sense of community to stay motivated to move forward on the path of fitness - that's why group training (sessions that involve more than five people) are becoming popular. Group training is affordable, offers some amount of one-on-one time with a trainer and also allows participants to be social. Go ahead and look for the closest aerobics, cycling and dance classes in your area!

5) Fitness For Senior Citizens

Fitness programs for older adults help them perform activities with more ease, especially when combined with functional training that lets you move furniture, lift things, coordinate better and stay independent. Another growing market with potential is the alarming population of obese and overweight youth, which the fitness industry hasn't really fully tapped into yet, but let's see what happens in 2018.
